I have not grown carrots yet, but I plan on trying them next year as they are part of the vegetable soup. Hopefully by the first deadline (2015) I can grow all the ingredients needed for the soup.
2012 did a direct sow in the first half of May. These cannot be transferred because they are likely to split. I was really careful to lay them out in 4x4 grids, then less than half sprouted. Next year, just sprinkle them in, then cover with 1/4" of compost. Thin them out if too many sprout.

The last time I planted these, they were overgrown with weeds. Next time, I'd like to try weeding and turing the soil, the covering with plastic wrap to prevent anything from getting in until the carrot sprouts are distinct enough to weed around.
