Now that I've got just a little experience, I'm finding that a collection of tools is nice, but you can really get a lot done with a table saw and drill press. My table saw is rated at 15amps, which is just over 2HP. I can get a router at that power. I think a router would serve well as a general purpose power house.

Not sure where to get or how to construct the arbor for the drill chuck.
Need to choose a spindle assembly and a chuck to match.

A possible pre-cursor to my Vulcan Open Lab idea.

Now that I've got just a little experience, I'm finding that a collection of tools is nice, but you can really get a lot done with a table saw and drill press. My table saw is rated at 15amps, which is just over 2HP. I can get a router at that power. I think a router would serve well as a general purpose power house.

Base Tools

  • Router
    • Straight bit
    • Edge (bearing) bit
    • Chamfer bit
    • Plunge bit
  • Bit driver and set
  • Digital Calipers
  • Dial gauge (?)
  • Dremel kit

Can we make our own chisels?

Drill Press

Purchase

  • drill bits
  • drill chuck and spindle assembly
  • thrust bearing
  • switch
  • balance spring (coil?)

The base will be particle board filled with concrete. The column will be a pvc pipe filled with concrete (possibly with rope compression). The table will be particle board. I think it's best to just top it with thick epoxy, but aluminum may also make sense.

Need to choose a spindle assembly and a chuck to match.
