Buying the steel balls would be a good option - alone they're pretty cheap. About $0.10 for real bearings but ones sold for slingshot ammo drop to $0.02. They may be precise enough to use or make them precise enough with some work.

Any path through a Vulcan tech tree will probably end up needing a lot of bearings. Good bearings get expensive quickly. If we can manufacture our own, that would fit the goals. This would require some extensive research.

  • Slew: I really like this because it should be able to take radial and axial load. But the friction may be too high. It also works well with 3D printing.
  • Spherical roller thrust: Also can take radial and axial load.
  • Babbit Bearing: Kind of fits our model well, requires attention, but it can be very performant.
