I was thinking about another portable bench. The top would fold up, clam-shell, but long ways. If the top of each half was one piece of plywood, it would be 8x2. I like the plywood bench I saw a while ago, and I'd be interested in mimicking it's structure for the legs. So rather than 2 2x4, the legs would be hollow plywood with a reinforced rib structure. This should produce something both lightweight and strong. This design also relies entire on rigid structures. It may be possible to build something very strong by having the leg-braces push the legs out and have wires pulling the legs in to create a strong, static structure.
