The case for Vulcan becomes more compelling if we can create useful things. The output projects should track where to acquire supplies (if not scavenged), total cost and an estimate of time. Any project should be reasonable with the base lab, but we can include instructions for which upgrades can cut down on the build time.

The outputs also create a profile of what functionality is needed. Rather than saying "we need a lathe", we see that we need round parts. A lathe is one means to that end, but so is 3D printing or a CNC mill. The minimal set of tools that lets us build all the outputs is probably very capable.

While it's tempting to include them, tools don't count because they are a means, not an end.

3D Printed

From just a 3D printer, a lot of useful things can be created. The key here is that the Vulcan Printer will meet certain requirements so anything in the library should print successfully with minimal cleanup.

  • measuring cups
  • shower head
  • door knob

Furniture

Ikea grade

Figure out how to use cheap materials like cardboard, osb and mdf to build reasonably sturdy structures. And then figure out ways to apply a finish like paint or veneer.

I expect this to be done with the large CNC unit. The software should also support this being done parametrically.

Fine

Really just a change in the construction materials and technique. Pieces designed from hardwoods cut on the cnc. Also designed parametrically.

Appliances

This gets a bit more complex, but makes a stronger argument. I actually think a cost reduction of just 10-20% would be a great justification because users may be able to get more savings through scavenging and they can get a longer lifespan from the appliances and greater security knowing that they can maintain them.

  • Washer/Dryer (combo or separate)
  • Dishwasher
  • Refrigerator
  • Chest freezer

Food

Automated food systems will probably appeal to the base, they can be cost positive. This can range from small window herb boxes to full scale aquaponics.

Vehicles

Bike

A lot of variation possible here that could make it stand out. Aluminum or composite. Variations between traditional and recumbent. Trailer, multi-seat.

Cart

A golf-cart like electric vehicle would be a good base for many things. Good for hauling stuff on larger properties.

Tractor

A small tractor. Designed for high torque and expansion to possibly a digger, bulldozer or other farm equipment.

Car

This would really be a crowning achievement. The first complication is safety - it needs to have airbags, seatbelts and we would need to do simulated crash tests. If we got that far, we could fund a real crash test.

It would also be cool to have this be parametric. Choose an engine (electric, gasoline, diesel) and body type (car, van, pickup, suv). Then the interior can be setup for many different upgrades.

Exercise Gear

Stationary Bike

Shouldn't be too hard.

Dumbbells

Handle can be wood or aluminum. The weights will be a 3D printed half-shell toroids. They include tubes that line up between the two halves that are then tapped and connected with threaded rod. The shells are filled with concrete and left to dry before assembly.

Add on plates for 8, 4, 2, 1 and 0.5lbs (or something similar in metric). The dumbbells will all accept these. The dumbbells then go up by 16lbs.

Rowing

Also shouldn't be too complex.
