The plan is to have this be my primary workstation and leave the desk/treadmill setup for occasional use (writing, watching movies).
The controls should be "at my fingertips" but arc out. The arm rests should be more wedge shaped - my elbows will stay in one place, but my wrists will follow an arc to each set of controls. There can also be extended interfaces directly in front of my fingertips - usb controls, possibly the optical disk.
I'd also like to incorporate foot pedals. Possibly as a mouse, also to launch other features.
Monitors
I want the 1:2:1 monitor layout. Individual mounts are $15 on Amazon. I'll also put the speakers (not woofer) and camera up on this.
The monitors need to sit in a position so that when I'm reclined they are as close as possible without need to move my head at all or my eyes too much. I want the reclining action to bring them down. This will require one of those linkages where the reclined and upright positions are both local minima.
Chair
The chair should be reclined, comfortable and supportive. Part of the reason this project is taking a higher priority is that my current set-up is hurting my neck and knees.
This is cited often as the very best chair for this sort of thing. This is a high res picture. I should be able to pull the angles and make a decent replica. That chair is motorized, but I would just add a toothed break to hold the desired position.
Angles
- Should -> Back : 150°
- Back -> Thighs : 120°
- Thighs -> Calves: 125°

Surprisingly, this is the tricky part. No great options (at least none yet), so I'll build one. Need to prototype the layout with Lego or cardboard.
The Leonardo is easier to use as a mouse/keyboard, eBay clones at $4. Each hand will have two shift registers, I should be able to share some of the pins on the Arduino between them. Keyboard is a wire matrix with a diode on each key.
Split by hand. A lot of the "pinky" keys are moved to the thumbs and feet. I want to put a scroll wheel probably between "I" and "O". I could add a basic "weight" sensor to the chair and have it send "lock" when I get up. There are 3.6" touchscreens for arduino - that could be cool. There's also room for an additional row for the first finger on each hand. And, if I move the spacebar, one below. Again, the Ergodox layout looks really good.
I'd like to add an LCD display (16x2 HD44780, probably also with a shift reg) and internal functionality. The primary one is macro record/playback. I may do media keys this way, but I don't use media keys often. Adding a clock would be nice. I don't want it to rely on any feedback from the computer, so no "monitors" of any kind - maybe can pull time from NIST radio.

Best source so far: http://mechanicalkeyboards.com/shop/index.php?l=product_list&c=43 The other (non Cherry) switches are cheaper.
Put a few pedals on and let the Arduino code remap them.
Reading
Maybe (someday) add a second camera and spot for a book so I can read on the monitors while laying back.
