This is a little extensive, but what I'd like to do is build a shop first for construction. Which has always sort of been the plan. The shop itself will be a simple cob structure.
I'd like to build the Earthship on a large plot of land with a lot of trees (>10 acres at least 20% forested). Before starting the earthship, I'll spend some time constructing the workshop.

The main feature of the shop is that it will have a 5 hp stirling engine. The shop can be configured as a saw mill or CEB press. I can use trees onsite for lumber, and well, dirt.
The first decision that needs to be made here is if the shop is permanent or temporary. If permanent, it will need to be near the earthship and designed to eventually house all the systems (water, power, climate).

The left overs from the lumber will be used to run the stirling engine.
The shop will be a cob construction with a basic roof. It needs to be long enough to mill 10' boards. The shop will operate off of a wood powered generator. Originally I was looking at Stirling engines, but I now believe that is unfeasible. Either steam or wood gasification now looks best. Power should be around 5hp, that what's necessary to drive a mill. The generator needs to be able to operate in several modes. I want to be able to hook it up via belts to the more power hungry tools (the mill, table saw). It will sometimes run an electric generator and will sometimes run a hydraulic pump (ceb press, possibly others).

To build the components I'd like to setup a small foundry. The technique that looks most interesting is using a 3d printer to print wax and then do lost wax casting.
The operational plan is to cut down trees and run them through the mill. All wood will be solar dried and the wood chips will be run through the CEB press to make fuel bricks. The dried scraps will feed to the generator for power and the boards will be used to construct the house (and other parts of the shop).

I need to do further research, but I'm considering building a forge to construct some of the tools.

The tools are
* lumber mill
* CEB press
* table saw
* planer
* drill press
* lathe
* shop vac (& dust bin)
* bench grinder
* sander (good, random orbital)
* band saw
* jointer

I'd like to build the Earthship on a large plot of land with a lot of trees (>10 acres at least 20% forested). Before starting the earthship, I'll spend some time constructing the workshop.

The first decision that needs to be made here is if the shop is permanent or temporary. If permanent, it will need to be near the earthship and designed to eventually house all the systems (water, power, climate).

  • lumber mill
  • CEB press
  • table saw
  • planer
  • drill press
  • lathe
  • shop vac (& dust bin)
  • bench grinder
  • sander (good, random orbital)
  • band saw
  • jointer
