So the walls have been a major hangup. But this may be a great opportunity to try out a simple version of the sorts of systems I'm interested in using long-term. Project plan for the basement
- X Clean basement out
- X Tear everything out
- X Schedule mold removal & electrical
- Hang drywall
- Tape drywall
- paint drywall
- install floors
- install baseboard and molding
- Build bar and cabinets
I also think I want to put in the floor before the drywall so it can go under it a little. But I should put in and seal the bottom piece first.
Walls

I haven't been able to find a system like this, but I can cheat a little. The metal studs are available at HD. I'll just use a regular stud across the top and bottom. I can get metal tabs on EB pretty cheap. I'll put in 6 per stud. That should be plenty.
Update
So the walls have been a major hangup. But this may be a great opportunity to try out a simple version of the sorts of systems I'm interested in using long-term. Rather than building a traditional wall, I can build a fake, free-standing wall. I have less issue then building it from wood because if I have to replace a section, it's easy.
I will put pillars in the corners and along the long wall at the 1/3 and 2/3 point. The panels will be bead-board backed by thin rigid foam insulation and made rigid with wood strips (probably 1"x0.5" plywood).
Bar/Cabinets
I'll need to get exact measurements, but I want two taller cabinets at each end, a working space in the middle with shallow shelves. An open space underneath for a mini-fridge. The left-hand cabinet will hide the ugly pipe (but leave it accessible) and the right hand cabinet will hold the electronics as well as having a space for a laundry basket under the chute.
Cashway for lumber
https://www.woodmagazine.com/make-cabinets-the-easy-way
It's 2' deep, 7' tall, but I'll need to go a bit lower for the vent. A little less than 2' is fine for the insides, I'll lose some to the back and face, so I can get two out of a sheet.
TV
Not much, but I'd like to repaint the chimney, put up shelves for the speakers and put up something to hold the cabling.
It may be worth putting up a facade of brick or stone.
Floor
There was a lot of moisture under the floor. I really need to get the gutter situation fixed.
I could put in a dimpled subfloor like this. I'll need 4 rolls.
Update
We painted the floor with an epoxy paint, but it's not very durable. I think I'll finish the rest of the basement as is, but when it's done, I'll go back and put in a linoleum floor. Even if some moisture is trapped, it can't mold.
Measurements
Ground 13' x 22'
Dry wall: (13+22)*7*2 = 490 sqft
Floor: 13*22 = 286
Bar area: 8'6"W x 7'T x 2'D
Pipe is about 20" wide, 55" high.
Chute is about 15" wide
