I'm looking at this again because I want to build something with very nice wood.

My Design

I want a semi-grandfather design, a base and 4 columns to support the clock rather than wall hung. I want an hour and minute hand. Weight driven, wound with planetary gears. I really like the marble strike movement, though I'd want to use polished stone.

I'm curious if bearings would make the gears run smoother.

Electro Mechanical

Many beautiful examples of this
