To start, just get a DP50V5A.

Features

Two main channels

  • Constant voltage, max current
  • Constant current, max power
  • Function generator, set form and voltage, max current

I also want some additional low power outputs at 12V, 9V, 5V and 3.3V. Two standard AC plugs, and USB.

Design

The first phase will take 110VAC in and run it through a bridge rectifier and we'll need a big-ass cap to smooth the ripple and store power. There will be a lighted switch on the front for main power. Next to that I want an LED hooked up to the main cap to show if the system still has a charge. Obviously, need a big resistor there.

From this point, there will be three circuits, two for the channels and one for low power, constant voltage. The constant voltage will use a simple switching regulator (probably a LM2575T) to drop from 110VDC to 14VDC. We'll then use linear regulators for 12, 9, 5 and 3.3 VDC. The 3.3VDC will be used to power the microcontrollers for the channels.

Each channel will have a microcontroller and a 20x4 HD44780 display, as well as a few controls (probably 4 buttons and a rotary encoder). I'm not exactly sure on the circuit for this, but the microcontroller will be controlling the inputs to a circuit with a switching stage, a linear stage and a current limiter. There will also be output to the display and input from the buttons and rotary encoder.
