I built this crossbow late in high-school. It used 20 rubber-bands in parallel on each side for a pretty high draw force. I could launch a bolt about 80 ft. The trigger mechanism was one that I found online consisting of 2 pieces - a trigger and string catch. The design was easy to implement and worked well. It would have worked better if there had been a small spring pushing against the trigger, this would have enabled automatic cocking. Instead you had to get the string in place and then rotate the trigger into position.
