Bed
I'm throwing out the old bed frame, I'd like to build a simple replacement, hopefully it will be semi-temporary as I'd really like to do the Murphey Bed in a year.
Main
I like this bed with this headboard.
There are 2 structural pieces and 4 decorative pieces.
The top of the bed is built from 2x4s with a pine skirt. 2 beams will run the length 1/3 and 2/3 across with fittings for the base. I can use the router to cut a gap in the 2x4s for the top of the skirt. The skirt also needs small corner pieces to help hold the mattress in place.
The base is also constructed of 2x4s. It's the edges of a box and the top slides onto it. This supports most of the weight.
There are 3 shelving units that are mostly decorative. I'll use whatever the widest pine board available is. Simple pine feet will hold it a little off the ground. It does need to fit tightly against the underside of the top to provide a bit of support to the edges. Also, make sure the vertical supports line up with 2x4s. Nothing will actually hold these in place. The space between the base the and the edge of the skirt is just large enough, so they're simply constricted to place. These 3 are actually built first because everything else is derived from them.
The headboard is purely decorative. It will bolt to the top. There will be 9 vertical slats, 18" high. The outermost of which will go all the way to the floor, the center will go down to bolt to the top (3 anchor points, 2 legs). Pine boards will run the length on the inside and outside, the bottom inside will overlap the top, giving a little extra stability. One more pine board will go across the top and overhang the edges on the sides and front.
All of the pine surfaces can be wood filled, sanded and painted. I'll paint it white first, then Lauren can choose another color.
The top should be 80"x60"

Electrical
Because I can't do simple.
Add a USB+power to each side. Along the bottom of the skirt, add some LEDs and three PIR motion sensors. I'll do this with an Arduino, that plugs right into the USB power. Feed the IR sensor into the Arduino, output to the LEDs on PWM, do a nice fade out effect. I'll use RGB LEDs, light will come on white, over 10 seconds fade to blue, then off.
