Big Game

For years I've wanted to build a large, sandbox game. Minecraft has significantly change my perspective on such games and this document contains my notes.

Design Rules

  1. Simplicity: Minecraft solved a lot of classic problems that are very complex by not including them. No (initially at least) NPC, simple graphics. Large simple meshes, no rotation. It will be easier to avoid problems then solve them so pick your battles.
  2. Sandbox: The player will invent the game. Just give them the tools

What I Want

  • Anything the player can do, the player can build a machine to do
  • Vehicles, land and sea platforms for mobile fortresses.
  • No levels or skills. This is all intrinsic to the person. You learn how to play the game, that's your level.

General Notes

To counter the automation aspect of the game, I want all parts to wear out over time. To counter this, there will be prevention mechanisms like oil as well as higher quality parts that last longer.
