Forge

On the "someday, maybe" list.

I'd like to try making Damascus style kitchen knives - they're beautiful and good ones are worth a lot. They require basic forging equipment

Learning

Induction Forge

The electronic aren't that difficult - terrifying and they require a bit of complex tuning and math, but fundamentally only a few parts. Getting firebrick is mildly expensive, but probably less than $200.

Power Hammer

Most designs seem to work on a cam/crank, but I'd rather go pneumatic. I'm having trouble finding exact numbers on the force (momentum/Ns) of a hammer. But pneumatic should be enough and it would give me more control over both speed and power.

Other Tools

I'd need a belt sander, and some way to weld billets together.

Knife Design

Look at "convex grind", prevents food from sticking: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9PduHBjrfCY

Handle Materials

  • Birch: supposed to be very light, looks good
  • Ebony: great color, very hard.

Tool Steel

Look at VG-10 steel, http://bestpocketknifetoday.com/discovering-the-best-knife-steel/ Actually, CPM S35VN looks better.
