I like the hinge mechanism worked into the handle. This should keep it closed as well as make it easier to open. It might also make sense to put a bend in the handle. It may even make sense to crisscross the handles so that when it's closed they're pulling against each other.

Maybe put a magnet somewhere to hold needles.

It may also be possible to arrange the spools on something like a hinge rack so they fold up compactly in the box but can be displayed while working. Actually, the same hinge mechanism can be used. 3 racks, each holding 5x3 pegs. I think the setup there would be 2 wings on top (for small storage) then store all the spools in the bottom so that they can pull out when in use.

I'd also like to put a protected razor blade in it somewhere for cutting thread. Use a standard blade so it can be replaced.

Be sure to time the project.

I was going to order the spools, but it might not be too bad to make them. I could use the drill press as a lathe. Could be really cool to do 4 pieces joint (and it would be stronger). It would also probably be easier to do 2 dowels, one for caps and one for center and then glue everything together.

Now I think the best idea is to build a simple spool stand that fits into the bottom of the box. When working, the spools can be setup. To put them away, just put the whole stand in the box and close the lid.
